Can MRI Be Bulk Billed?

MRI bulk billing is a payment option under the Medicare system in Australia. This is universal health insurance. The health service provider receives 85% of the scheduled fee for outpatient services. 75% of the fee for inpatient services. Bulk billing MRI happens by billing the government via the patient’s Medicare card. At Providence Medical, MRI bulk billing is available to patients who hold a Medicare card.

During MRI Bulk Billing

Once in the scanner, the MRI technician will communicate with the patient. They will do this via the intercom to make sure that they are comfortable. They will not start the scan until the patient is ready to go ahead with the procedure.

During the scan, it is very important to stay still. Any movement can disrupt the images. Loud clanging noises will come from the scanner but this a normal part of the process.

Sometimes it can feel uncomfortable during the procedure. But the patient can speak to the MRI technician. They can do this via the intercom. They can request that the scan is stopped.

After MRI Bulk Billing

After the MRI scan, the radiologist will examine the images. They do this to check whether any more need creating. If the radiologist is satisfied, the patient can go home. The patient is then required to make another appointment to receive the results.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound scans are used for screening, diagnosis or to help with certain treatments. Ultrasound scans can be used to:

  • Examine organs
  • Examine tendons and ligaments
  • Examine lumps to see if they need further testing
  • Check blood flow
  • Help with treatments

Ultrasound has many uses in pregnancy. This includes monitoring progress and screening for complications. 3D and 4D ultrasound scans are sometimes used in pregnancy for non-medical purposes.

An ultrasound scan happens by using a hand-held scanner. Sometimes a transducer, connected to a computer. High-frequency sound waves are then sent into the body. As the sound waves bounce around, the echoes are converted into electrical impulses. These then show up as an image on a screen.

During most ultrasound scans you will have to lay on your back or side. A gel is applied to your skin where the scan takes place. The sonographer will move the transducer on the gel. During an ultrasound, there will be some pressure applied but you will not feel any pain.

An ultrasound scan is usually complete within 40 minutes. There are no aftereffects of an ultrasound. You will be able to go about your normal activities afterwards.
